Royal Caribbean has launched the “Wishes at Sea” program in partnership with Make-A-Wish Shanghai, expanding its ongoing efforts to create meaningful vacation experiences for children facing critical illnesses.

Designed for children aged 3 to 17, the initiative helps bring their most heartfelt wishes to life through memorable family adventures at sea.

The program was inaugurated on June 12 aboard Spectrum of the Seas, marking a new chapter in Royal Caribbean’s long-term collaboration with Make-A-Wish.

The launch also celebrated the successful fulfillment of the first wish, as 13-year-old Xiao Ze from Nanyang (Henan), China, embarked on a 3-night getaway to Jeju, Korea, with his family.

Supported by Royal Caribbean volunteers and Make‑A‑Wish Shanghai wish granters, the journey reflects the brand’s commitment to delivering experiences that inspire connection, joy and strength.

A meaningful partnership rooted in purpose

The launch ceremony brought together leaders from Royal Caribbean and Make-A-Wish Shanghai, including Benjamin Bouldin, President Greater China & Managing Director of Asia, Royal Caribbean; Yang Shuo, Royal Caribbean’s Human Resources Director; Flemming Nielsen, Captain, Spectrum of the Seas; Igor Benkovic, Hotel Director, Spectrum of the Seas; Gao Feng, Director, Make‑A‑Wish Shanghai; Secretary‑General Shen Li; and Project Manager Zhang Jun jointly witnessed the start of the heartwarming initiative.

Spectrum of the Seas brings a once-in-a-lifetime wish to life

Living with progressive muscular dystrophy, Xiao Ze has limited opportunities to travel. Yet he has long dreamed of seeing the open ocean, watching the sunrise at sea and enjoying meals with his family during a vacation.

On the June 12–15 getaway from Shanghai, China, to Jeju, Korea, his wish came to life through a series of memorable experiences. On the morning of day two, Xiao Ze visited the bridge and watched the sunrise over the horizon, a long-awaited moment.

To commemorate the occasion, Make-A-Wish presented him with an honorary crew certificate, celebrating his own seafaring adventure.

Xiao Ze and his family explored Jeju, visiting popular destinations including Snoopy Garden, Fairy Tale Village and Pyoseon Beach, while enjoying local flavors and taking in the island’s natural beauty.

Back on Spectrum of the Seas, the family enjoyed signature highlights designed for vacationers of all ages: panoramic ocean views from the North Star and shared meals in the main dining room.

As night fell at the Royal Theater, they enjoyed world-class entertainment of The Silk Road and The Effectors, inspired by global cultures and creativity.

“We are deeply grateful to see Xiao Ze’s wish come to life. This journey is more than a vacation. It brought comfort, bolstered confidence and offered hope to Xiao Ze and his family, in a time when they need it most,” said Shen Li, Secretary-General of Make-A-Wish Shanghai.

Through initiatives such as the “Wishes at Sea” program, Royal Caribbean continues to offer inclusive, uplifting vacations that support children and communities.
